Captains Newsletter October 2022 from Don Wraight

Captains Newsletter October 2022 Hello happy golfers. Autumn has arrived and in my view the course is still looking very good. Well done to all the green staff, who I must remind the male members of the club that we do have a female member on the staff. Please be aware when you’re visiting the trees. The Denbighshire Golf Union held their autumn meeting at our club on the 25th September. The course was presented in a very good condition despite the heavy rain leading up to the Sunday. Mark and staff doing a grand job, thank you one and all. There were 5 prizes on offer from the union and embarrassingly Clays won them all. Nick Buley and his partner Andy Matthews taking the top prize with 44pts closely followed by 4 teams on 43pts separated on countbacks. Well done everyone for entering and supporting this event. Let’s hope we at Clays can hold future DGU events. More congratulations go to Jane Evans and Graham Davidson-Clarke who played in the Purvis Trophy at Conway golf club and came home with the trophy. Well done both and a great achievement by Graham who has come back from a very nasty foot trauma. Not to be outdone the Ladies team retained the Borders League trophy at Mile End by beating Llanymynech, well done. The Ladies section is really doing a grand job. Senior section held an almost Ryder Cup trophy competition with teams representing Wales versus The Rest of the World which resulted in a tie 6 matches each. A fun day. Thanks to the Mike Healey, who organised the competition and the day. I was very pleased to represent my mother’s country. Aside from the competition part of Clays the Ladies held an afternoon tea in honour of Roz Carmen who passed away recently. Roz was a long standing member at Clays and will be solely missed by us all. My Captain’s away day was well supported; thank you all for being there at Abergele golf Club. It was a sunny and warm day, with a slight breeze. There was a trophy for 1st place together with a kitty prize which went to Paul Stevenson with 46pts, 2nd was Chris McAteer. The wooden spoon trophy went to Peter Bowen. As I stated at the start of my report autumn is here and leaves will be falling by the bucket loads, damp and wet conditions I daresay will follow. At a request from Hayley, staff and myself could members please be kind enough to clean their shoes and trollies as they come off the course. Mud in the car park and even more so in the clubhouse is distraction from how we wish to present Clay’s. Please make use of the air compressor that is provided. Lastly a reminder that Presentation day is on the 15th October and I would like to see all the trophy winners and runners up to be there to collect their prizes. There will be a texas scamble before the presentations tees are still available to fill; entry sheet is on the bottom of the stairs noticeboard. Hope you all continue to enjoy your golf Don Wraight Captain
