Clays Junior Golfer plays his way to the USA

Matthew Sandoz, age 11, from Clays Golf Club near Wrexham was recently successful at the Lee Westwood Golf Camp National Finals held at Close House, near Newcastle, winning his Under 13 age category and being crowned the overall winner. As part of his prize Matthew won a family golf holiday to Florida with the possibility of joining Lee Westwood for a few holes of golf.

Throughout the year the Lee Westwood Golf Camps have been on-going across the UK with the winners and runner ups from these Camps being invited to attend the Finals that were held at Close House on 29th September, where Lee Westwood is the Touring Professional. Matthew had previously won his 3 day Golf Camp that was held at Macdonald Portal, Tarporley, in July earlier in the Summer to qualify. The Finals this year were extra special as they were attended by Lee Westwood himself who travelled down from Gleneagles after helping the European Team secure an emphatic victory over the USA in the Ryder Cup

Matthew was fortunate enough to have attended the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, the previous week, and was inspired after watching his heroes win to go one further himself in this years Final as he finished runner last year at Gainsborough. The Finals consisted of skills tests in the morning which tested a players short game ability including chipping, putting, pitching and bunker play. The finalists then played on the Close House Filly course in the afternoon with the overall winner being crowned 2014 Lee Westwood Golf Camp National Winner.

There was also further family success at the Finals as his younger brother William Sandoz, age 9, was runner up in the Under 10s age group and received a trophy and selection of prizes from Lee Westwood.

Matthew, has been a junior member of Clays Golf Club since he was age 6, is also a member of Wrexham Golf Club, and has already been recognised as having potential to go a long way in the game. Already at the age of 11 he has been a member of the Golf Union of Wales Nursery Squad for the past 2 years, is receiving training at Denbighshire County level and is also a member of the Clays Junior Elite Squad.

Matthew is coached at the North Wales Coaching Academy at Clays Golf Club by Gareth James, Head PGA Professional and Golf Union of Wales Regional Coach, who looks after Welsh golf's elite amateur players. William is coached by Sam Griffiths, PGA Professional at Clays, who is also part of the Golf Union of Wales Coaching Team at Nursery Squad level.
