Message from Barry Dare regarding Poppy Day and Seniors Xmas Party 2020 plus information from Mike Healey

Good Evening Everyone Ken Lawrence Memorial Trophy/ Poppy Day Appeal Looking forward to getting back after the “circuit breaker”? We have planned the Ken Lawrence Memorial Trophy/Poppy Day Appeal for Tuesday 10th of November. The day before Remembrance Day, and the day after we are allowed back to play golf! This is a great chance to try out your new WHS handicap index! The competition, as always, will have an array of prizes, donated by the Seniors committee, and any members who can get their prizes to the club on Tuesday Morning! The entrance fee is £5 as usual, payable on the day. Please book your place through Mike Healey in the normal way. Xmas Party and Seniors Subs It has been fairly obvious for some time that we would not be able to have our Christmas Party this year, but we have tried to hold off the decision for as long as possible, I feel we cannot go any further without saying, sadly, this year’s event is cancelled. In the circumstances, your committee agreed that we would not charge £5 seniors subs for next year for all those who have paid this year, as such a large proportion of our monies are channelled into this event. Any new members, of course would need to pay next year’s fees. We would however have our normal draw for a bottle of Whiskey for those of you who were fully paid members for this current year. Good Luck. Hope to see you soon Best Wishes Barry ************************************************8 And from Mike Dear Seniors - you have received a note from Barry regarding future dates. Providing Mr Drakeford is happy that all can open up again, we might be able to resume some competitive golf. Please find attached a copy of the Senior's November calendar starting with the Ken Lawrence (Poppy Day) Trophy, which takes place on Tuesday 10th November (the day after Wrexham/Wales return and assuming the course is open). There is a £5.00 entry fee for this event, which will all go towards the Royal British Legion collection. There won't be any kitty cash prizes but a range of bottle prizes instead, very much along the lines of the recent BHF fund-raising Day. The sign up sheet for this event is now open. Don has asked me to remind you that the November medal has been moved back from 5th November to Thursday 12th November (busy week) and quite a number of you have signed the medal sheet in the clubhouse (if you have, you are already entered). The medal sheet has been taken down, so if you still wish to enter, you need to e-mail Don for medal entry. Tuesday 17th November also sees the beginning of the Senior Winter League, which takes place over six rounds between early November and February, depending on weather. For newcomers, we play for Stableford points but the top ten places score League points 1 - 10, which accumulate in a League table. On a practical note, there have been several instances of incorrect kitty comp results being given out of late, due to unclear recording of scores. We have had to correct results after publishing. Some members have been confused in marking their own cards and noting playing partners - it doesn't matter which columns or methods are used BUT in order to avoid mistakes in the future - Please enter the score for the named player(s) in the box provided - bottom right-hand corner on the scorecard. Finally, as an exercise in fairness, your tee times over the last 16 kitty comps have been recorded. It is impossible to get everybody out before 9.30, so the records show 4 divided periods of time and the aim is to distribute a reasonable spread for each of you. Some seniors have requested later times, while others on school runs might request early tees from time to time. If you don't fit either of these groups, I am checking your times but if you feel that you are still owed a few more "earlies", please let me know whenever we next meet at Clays. Please find Tee Tables attached. Enjoy whatever you are doing outside of golf - Stay safe!! Mike Healey

Pairs betterball October 22nd results from Mike Healey

We are due to come out of lockdown on Monday 9th November – just in time for our Ken Lawrence Memorial (Poppy) Day competition the next day. Barry Dare will circulate more details about that and also Xmas arrangements but suffice it to say,Mike Healey will open a sign-up several days before the 10th November and with a bit of luck, the non-Wrexham residents might be allowed back into Clays to play. Please find today’s results below. Mike Healey Pairs Betterball Everybody was desperate to get their golf in before the lockdown and some good scores were recorded today amongst the 18 pairs that took part. The overall winners walked it with an incredible score (unheard of!!) but then the results after that were very close. Second place was clear and then third place scored three pairs on 42 points requiring countback. There were four prizes in total and this is how they read: First: Peter Bowen & Damian Atkin 53 points £7.00 each Second: Liam Roddis & Mal Williams 43 points £5.00 each Third: Tom Blackshaw & Bill Kelleher 42 points (Countback)£4.00 each Fourth: Joe White & Bob Jarvis 42 points (Countback)£2.00 each

Seniors British Heart Foundation Day and Kitty Competition Oct 21st 2020. Results via Mike Healey

Senior BHF Day and Kitty Comp Results What a great day for Clays golf and the Club Captain’s fundraising for the British Heart Foundation! Great weather, dry autumn conditions, two competitions in one, bags of prizes and no Englishmen to take the prizes away!! Thanks to Mike Hollings who has once again done the business with results at the coalface and Russ with general on-the-day organisation. I can now announce the winners in the two sections: Firstly, we were all entered for the BHF prizes in an Individual Stableford Comp and I know that everybody involved was extremely generous with the Club Captain’s fundraising. Dave would like to add a big thank you to all the Seniors who sponsored prizes to this event and indeed, all who contributed on the day, which has managed to raise £300.00. Overall, added to his three-day fundraising, Dave has totalled £715.00 to send to BHF. Overall BHF Winner: Ron Roberts 39points Golf Voucher Nearest Pin on Hole 5: Mike Hollings Bottle of Wine Longest Drive on Hole 9: David Jones 124 Bottle of Wine Nearest Pin on Hole 12: Malcolm Williams Bottle of Wine Nearest Pin in 2 on Hole 18: Ernie Williams Bottle of Wine A Long-Putt Comp was held but alas nobody was successful so all monies were donated to BHF. Seniors Waltz competition October 15th 2020. Results via Mike Healey

On the evidence of ride-ons going out, I presume that the course is drying out nicely. Can I thank Andy in reception for help with re-arranged tees and Mike Hollings for cards again. Please find below a short report and the result for today’s Waltz. There is a change to the calendar next week (Please find Barry’s e-mail) and I will send out another e-mail later on with details. Mike Healey Waltz Report and Result No fewer than 34 Seniors took part today – there was one no-show , so numbers changed to 6 x Threeball and 4 x Fourball and this changes prizes. The attendance rose with ride-ons being allowed out and the better, drier weather! Great day for golf. All the holes were open and everybody put their best foot forward. The old one, two, three proved popular with good scores coming in. Again because of the numbers, the Waltz was held as two competitions: Waltz - Threeball First: Peter Bowen, Bill Kelleher, Keith Jones 78 points £4.00 each Second: Keith Hawthorn, Tony Jackson, Dave Talbot 71 points £2.00 each Waltz - Fourball First: Peter Taylor, Colin Brown, Bob Brown, Dilly Jones 83 points £4.00 each

Blind pairs October 13th 2020

Twenty Seniors took part today, once again, numbers were reduced by buggies not being allowed, due to damp patches around the course. At least all the holes were open, so obvious signs of it drying out. There was an early start for most and only the tail-enders might have experienced a few showers. Nobody knew who their partner was so all to play for, right through to the end, for as many Stableford points as possible. It could not have been closer: Results: First: Alan Bottomley (30pts), Mick Carnell (31pts) Total (61pts) £5.00 each Second: Peter Taylor (27pts), Bill Kelleher (33pts) Total (60pts) £3.00 each Equal Third: Ernie Williams (32pts), Steve Monk (27pts) Total (59pts) £1.00 each Equal Third: Peter Bowen (34pts), Dave Talbot (25pts) Total (59pts) £1.00 each

Bonus Ball report from Mike Healey October 6th 2020

Today’s Report and Bonus Ball Result Numbers were low, partly due to members being distanced under lockdown and partly due to the weather. The course was always going to be very wet after the heavy rain at the weekend so we were further reduced by buggies and ride-ons being temporarily suspended. For those that did play, only 16 holes were open (16 and 17 closed) and seven three-balls contested the comp. The following groups were successful: Bonus Ball First: Damian Atkin, Peter Thomas, Richard Key 120 points £5.00 each Second: Bob Brown, George Hughes, Tony Jackson 112 points £2.00 each

All contributions gratefully received. Just a quick mention of How Did I Do (HDID). It has probably not escaped your attention that there are some issues with the software. A glitch was discovered that resulted in a significant amount of effort from Peter, our handicap secretary working in conjunction with HDID helpline, to manage. Unfortunately, the software glitch resulted in competition results being issued on a number of occasions. Thanks for your patience while this issue is resolved. Finally, once again can I remind all members the implementation of the World Handicapping System (WHS) will happen on 2nd November 2020. Our club has received notification of the course slope rating along with associated information from Wales Golf. The club council is seeking clarification from WG on some points before communicating all the relevant information to members. Also, an explainer page will be added to the members section of our club website in the next couple of weeks. Remember, members can download resources explaining all the changers to player handicaps and course rating etc. from the Wales Golf website: https://www.walesgolf.org/world-handicap-system-home/. What is the course slope rating I hear you ask? Men yellow tee-111, men white tee-112, ladies red tee-120, ladies yellow tee-125. Can I also remind members that your new WHS handicap will be calculated and allocated by WG. Therefore, should you not be pleased with your allocated handicap you know who to contact? Enjoy your golf and stay safe. Dave Palferman Captain 2020/21 dplaferman@gmail.com
