Seniors Winter League Round 6 March 21st 2017

Cliff Evans sent the following report.........Out of a field of 43  today, 38 entered in the two's competition with only one achieving a two,  on the 5th hole Mr.Frank Rodenhurst

The final round of the Seniors Winter League was held today in sunny but windy and quite cold conditions. The game was disrupted by the seasonal necessity of hollow-tining of the greens, but green-keeping staff did their best to keep as many greens playable as they could. The 2nd hole was closed throughout, but the 17th and 18th holes were open for early players (starting from the 14th or 16th tees) but not for later players (starting from the 1st tee). Additionally, the 16th hole was initially fully available but later on, only in a shortened version with a temporary green.
Committee members present collectively decided that it would be unfair to award kitty competition prizes on the day, because different groups of players played a different set of holes or different hole lengths. All members present agreed to donate the collected kitty to Section Funds. However, by taking scores from Holes 1 to 16 only (excluding the closed Hole 2) and taking into account the fact that the only 4 players present who had enough league points to still win the overall title all played together, and thus all played an identical course, it was concluded that it was appropriate and fair to allow the results achieved to stand for the purpose of allocating league points only.

43 players competed. Results were:

1st - 10 points - Frank Rodenhurst with a score of 30.

2nd - 9 points - Nick Lee with 29.

3rd - 8 points - Harold Hughes with 27.

4th - 7 points - John Davis with 26.

5th - 6 points - Stewart Poole with 25.

6th - 5 points - Dave Palferman with 25.

7th - 4 points - Steve Monk with 25.

8th - 3 points - Malcolm Williams with 25.

9th - 2 points - Brian Downes with 24.


10th - 1 point - Richard Key with 23.

 Lovely day with periods of sunshine and cold winds at times! Nigel Davies, Seniors Captain chaired the presentation proceedings. Thanks given to Don Wraight for organisation of the day Catrina for the food etc.

There was only one person with a 2 today namely Mike Hollings on the 5th using an 8 iron plus putt.

The winner of the Ray Mortell Trophy was Harold Hughes with 40 points. There were also some excellent scores by Tony Harcombe/39 points, Rod Evans/36 points, Dill Jones/37 points and Bill Kelleher with 37 points.

A beautiful sunny day at Clays when 28 competed in a Texas Scramble, each player having to take 3 drives

A lovely warm and sunny day on which 43 Seniors competed.
In the 2's competition there were 3 winners namely Chris Jacques on the 5th, Bob Brown on the 12th and Phil Hughes on the 17th.

The full results as follows:-43 players competed over 17 holes today in the 5th round of the Seniors Winter League, with the point scorers being as follows:

1st, scoring 10 league points - Tony Owens, with 36 stableford points.

2nd, scoring 9 league points - Cliff Evans, with 35.

 the match against Holywell GC on March 14th is now confirmed as being held at Holywell. The return fixture on September 5th will now be held at Clays.
This means all of our usual tee times on Tuesday March 14th will now be available for a kitty comp for everyone not going to Holywell - there is therefore no need to book tees prior to the normal 9.00 a.m. start.

New Golf Rules from Fred

As the Beatles would say “I heard the news today O’Boy”. Changes to the rules of golf being considered in addition to accidental ball or marker movement on the green.

 

May putt out with the flag not removed; penalty drop from any height , even a few inches, rather than from shoulder height; maximum score applied to a hole, giving the opportunity for a player having reached this score, but not the green, may pick up and apply the maximum score to their card; not sure how this would work in competition. Sheriff

St Davids Day February 28th 2017

A large field of 52 players competed today with 48 entering the 2's competition organised by Cliff Evans. Thanks must go to Don Wraight for organising the competition and to the catering staff for  a splendid meal after the competition. Of course sincere thanks to Roy Jones for sponsoring the event yet again.

All 18 holes were open today and results were as follows

1. Frank Rodenhurst with a super 39 points

2. Ernie Williams 37 points

4. Gary Campbell  36 points

Rule via Fred February 23rd 2017 and Storm Doris

This blog is to advise the introduction  a local rules which shall amend wording for Rule 18 as recommended  by the R&A. The Local Rule once introduced shall eliminate the penalty for any accidental movement of a ball or ball-marker on the putting green.If the ball was accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment, there is no penalty and the ball is to be replaced and played from its original location. Today Storm Doris came and I wonder if any Seniors went out to play? If they did more news will be posted!
Well 9 Seniors turned up and only Tom McGrady put his tally up. They all sat around drinking coffee and left at 9.45am...wise. From the photos below you can see which Seniors turned up. Thanks to Tom McGrady for supplying the photos and the information.

Winter league round 4 February 21st 2017

Today's results in the Winter League, Round 4.
47 players competed over 17 holes, the 2nd hole still being closed. A par score was therefore 34 stableford points.
1st - earning 10 league points - Frank Rodenhurst with a score of 42.

2nd - 9 points - Dave Palferman with 41.

3rd - 8 points - Don Wraight with 37 (on countback).

4th - 7 points - Gary Campbell also with 37.

5th - 6 points - Nigel Harris with 36 (on countback).

6th - 5 points - Dilly Jones also with 36.

7th - 4 points - Peter Fraser with 35 (on countback).

8th - 3 points - Reg Peacock also with 35.

9th - 2 points - Nick Lee also on 35.


10th - 1 point - Ralph Hardy with 34 (on countback).





42 members played in the two's with five achieving a Two, Tom McGrady, Barry Evans on the 5th Hole, Chris Jacques on the12th Hole,  Alan Roberts and Ron Roberts  on the 17th Hole.

Pairs betterball February 16th 2017

44 Seniors competed today. The competition was played over 16 holes with both the 2nd and 14th out of action. The 15th was played from a very forward tee and became a par 4.

Results

In the 2's competition there were 5 winners....Mike Kalka on the 17th, Roy Jordan on the 5th, Steve Monk on the 17th, Mike Holllings on the 12th and Tom McGrady on the 5th

An interesting fact was that Colin Evans had 5 consecutive 3 pointers...well done

Seniors Waltz Competition February 14th 2017

Today is was very cold and the competition was played over 17 holes with the 2nd hole closed.

Rules of the competition as follows:-The waltz dance goes 1, 2 3 and then repeats the steps. Hence in this game format the highest team score on first hole is carded, followed by best 2 scores on second hole and then finally best 3 scores on next hole. This pattern in then repeated till the end of the game...easy and very enjoyable.


There were 2 separate competitions ....one for 3 balls and one for 4 balls

In the winning group Roy Jordan playing off 21 had a 2 on the par 4 10th hole. He did this with a rescue club off the tee followed by an 11 wood which went straight into the hole for 5 points.

Seniors Texas Scramble February 9th 2017

Today some 38 Seniors braved the very cold weather with temperatures between 2 and 3 C

A photo taken on 14th green  below:- Diane Dare taking a very short putt on the 14th green. On the hole Barry hit a long drive down left hand side way past the ditch. He then hit a superb 2nd shot into the rough on right hand side of the green. Diane then chipped to where one can see her putting from for a 4 for her team.
