Bonus ball October 31st 2017

Thanks to Steve Monk for supplying these results

Todays comp was a Bonus Ball with 9 teams of 4 and 2 teams of 3 - 42 players in all. A formula was used to enable conversion of 3-ball scores to an equivalent 4-ball score.

Explanation of scoring for Bonus Ball (previously called Yellowish Ball).
This is played as a stableford competition, ideally in 4-ball teams.
At every hole all four stableford scores count towards the team total, and a 'bonus' score is added. The bonus score is derived as follows.
At all holes on the front 9 of the course (holes 1 to 9 inclusive), the lowest stableford points score from the 4 team members is added as the bonus score.
At all holes on the back 9 of the course (holes 10 to 18 inclusive) the highest stableford points score from the 4 team members is added as the bonus score.
Some examples:-
On Hole 1, say, the 4 players record scores of 6/2, 4/3, 6/1, 5/2. The bonus score is the lowest of these, i.e. 1. So the team total for the hole is 9.
On Hole 7, say, the 4 players record scores of 5/2, 6/2, 5/3, 7/0. The bonus score is the lowest of these, i.e. 0. So the team total for the hole is 7.
On hole 10, the 4 scores are 4/4, 6/2, 5/2, 6/1. The bonus score is the highest of these, i.e. 4. So the team total for the hole is 13.

On hole 17, the 4 scores are 3/3, 4/2, 6/0, 5/1. The bonus score is the highest of these, i.e. 3. So the team total for the hole is 9.

Results were -
1st - Peter Lynch, Ralph Hardy and Steve Beech with 154 points.

2nd - Chris Jacques, Bill Hughes, Harold Hughes and Steve Monk with 153 points.

3rd - Noel Jones, Alan Bottomley, Mike Hollings and Andy Mitchell with 150 points

Tom McGrady ran and supplied the 2's competition results which was won by Reg Taylor who carded a 2 on the 5th

Strings Competition October 26th 2017

Today Steve Monk spent about 10 minutes before the Seniors went out to fully explain the format!

Strings  This is played as an individual stableford. HOWEVER, the normal stroke index at each hole is ignored. Instead, each player may choose how many of his total handicap allowance shots to take at each hole. He must inform the marker how many shots he wishes to take as soon as the hole is completed and BEFORE the next tee shot is taken. Markers – please mark Gross score in row A, then number of shots the player wishes to take at the hole in row B, then resultant stableford score in row C. At the end of the round, the total handicap shots taken in the whole of row B must not be greater than the player’s normal handicap.

Think about STRATEGY – will you take more than normal shots on a hole where you score a high gross and would normally score a blob, to bring your net score down to a point-scoring level, or will you use more than normal where you score a low gross, to result in a really big stableford score. It’s up to you!! Hope it’s a bit different and enjoyable.

The results below:-

39 players out today.

1st - Bob Brown with 37 points

=2nd - Alan Bottomley and Dave Jones, both with 36 points each

4th - Alan Pocklington with 35 points

=5th - Mike Healey, Dave Palferman and Fred Court, all with 34 points each.

The countback method was not used today.

There was only 1 winner in the 2's competition run by Andrew Mitchell where 36 players entered. That winner  was our Seniors Captain Nigel Davies. He carded his 2 on the 5th and wishes it to be known that it was achieved using a 9 iron which pitched just 5cm in front of the hole....well done Nigel.

Individual Stableford non qualifier October 17th 2017

After the very windy night it was to be expected that there might be some tree damage and so there was on the right hand side of 7th fairway and to right of 11th fairway. Pictures below. What was a real pain was the large number of leaves in the rough which meant finding balls was difficult. Derek has an ap on his phone which records the number of steps taken,,,,he took 19345 steps which equated to 10.31 miles. Most of that was due to walking up and down in the leaves looking for balls!!

Results:

44 players participated in the individual stableford kitty comp today, with a combination of long rough, lots of leaves, bright and low sun (and therefore quite a few ball searches and lost balls) together with variable wind, keeping many scores low. However, one player stood out from the crowd and he was today's very comfortable winner.......

1st - Dave Palferman with 37 points.

2nd - Mike Kalka with 31 points.

3rd - Ernie Williams with 30 points.

4th - Phil Morris with 29 points.

5th - Roy Jordan with 27 points.

6th - Malcolm Williams also with 27 points (on countback).

7th - Martin Povey with 26 points.

8th - Nick Lee also with 26 points (on countback).

Ernie Williams was the only player to card a 2 which he did on the 5th
