HOME MATCH VE HAWARDEN
Seniors - slightly later than normal but well worth it. Malcolm organised our home fixture against Hawarden, only to find out that that food was not available and the opposition were not in a position to exchange the fixture. Thinking outside the box, Malcolm quickly organised the after-match meal at Hotel Wrexham and 36 home and away players were well received and ultimately fed there. The forecast was for light rain through to 11.00am followed by heavy, thundery showers in between sunshine. We only saw the sunshine all morning and most players played in shirt sleeves. With the weather on side, Clays Seniors went about their business on the course. 9 pairs for each side set out but there was only ever going to be one winner. Quite a number of the matches finished 1 up but Clays ended up on top with 9 matches to nil. It wasn't the annihilation it appears. There were three twos scored in the Ballsweep - all by Hawarden players. Paul Talbot bagged his on the 2nd with a delightful chip in from just off the green and Colin Parsons followed suit, also on the 2nd. He then followed that up with a second two on the 5th hole and shot a birdie later on. How on earth did he lose that match? Just to rub salt into the wound, two Harwarden players mopped up by taking both bottles of wine in the raffle draw. Everybody was fed with a very good burger and chips followed by cheesecake and cream. The whole affair could not have been more amicable - compliments were abundant, especially regarding our greens and all agreed to look forward to the return match in September at Harwarden. Thanks again to all Clays members who played and both Malcolm and Tom for their organisation.
Before the senior team went out playing, Don and a dozen other seniors managed to bag early tees and organised their own Individual Stableford comp. Originally only 9 booked but others turned up expecting a tally draw roll-up. Please use calendars!! The scoring was fairly even all round and the top three cards all scored 32 points, requiring countback for prizes. Read on for results:
Individual Stableford - First: Alan Bottomley 32 points (20 c/b) Second: Alan Barnsdale 32 points (15 c/b) Third: Alan Pocklington 32 points (13 c/b) Well done all -
